04Overview

How do you hire a WordPress developer for a UK business?

Look for someone who covers your working day, owns the whole build and handles the UK-specific parts. Sanjeev Singh is a senior WordPress developer in India who works with UK businesses, building custom themes, Elementor and Divi sites and WooCommerce stores. He is online until 5:30 PM in London in winter and 6:30 PM in summer, so he shares your whole working day. Every project starts with a fixed written quote within 24 hours.

UK websites need a few things done properly. Under UK GDPR and PECR, analytics and advertising tags should not load until a visitor agrees, and Reject should be as easy as Accept. Sanjeev sets up cookie consent that genuinely blocks trackers, with Google Consent Mode so analytics can still model conversions. WooCommerce stores show consumer prices with 20% VAT included and invoices carry your VAT number.

UK shoppers expect card payments, Apple Pay and Google Pay through Stripe, PayPal, and pay-later options such as Klarna or Clearpay. Shipping can be set up for Royal Mail or a courier. Accessibility is built to WCAG 2.1 AA, the standard UK public sector websites must meet, and a sensible bar for every business.

A common UK situation is an agency that has moved on and left a site that is slow, hard to edit and owned by nobody. Sanjeev takes over existing WordPress sites, fixes speed until they pass Core Web Vitals on mobile, and rebuilds them as custom themes when needed, keeping Google rankings through 301 redirects for every old URL.

His work includes Technest, an Elementor site rebuilt as a fast custom theme with 14 editable layouts, DataDrone, a B2B site with seven solution pages and 105 resources, and Syncglim, a catalog in ten languages. Clients in Germany, Denmark and the US rate him 5.0 on Fiverr across 23 reviews, and he has been building software since 2016.

Compared with a UK agency, you work with the person writing the code, small changes are usually made the same day, and you are not tied to a support retainer. Projects take one to six weeks depending on scope. You own the code, domain, hosting and every login from day one, and payment is in US dollars against milestones you approve on staging.

06Ways to work together

  1. 01

    A new custom site

Designed and coded for your business, no page builder underneath, edited from simple fields.

  2. 02

    Elementor, Divi and other builders

New pages, fixes and speed work on the builder you already use, or a move to a clean custom theme when it’s time.

  3. 03

    Speed rescue

A slow site profiled and fixed until it passes Core Web Vitals on mobile, without a redesign.

  4. 04

    Cookie consent and accessibility

A consent banner that really blocks trackers, and fixes to WCAG 2.1 AA in the theme itself.

  5. 05

    WooCommerce

VAT-inclusive prices, Stripe or PayPal, pay-later options and Royal Mail or courier shipping zones.

  6. 06

    Redesign without losing rankings

Every old URL mapped and redirected, titles and schema kept, so a new look doesn’t cost you traffic.

Launching a WordPress site in the UK: a checklist

Most of a good UK website is the same as anywhere else. These are the parts that are different, and the ones I check before every UK launch.

Cookies and privacy

  1. Block trackers until consent. Google Analytics, Meta Pixel and similar tags should not load before a visitor clicks Accept.
  2. Make Reject as easy as Accept. Both buttons on the first layer of the banner, the same size.
  3. Publish a privacy policy that names what your forms and cookies collect, and who you share it with.
  4. Turn on Google Consent Mode, so your analytics still model conversions from visitors who say no.

Prices and VAT

  1. Show consumer prices with VAT included. UK shoppers expect the price they see to be the price they pay.
  2. Put your VAT number on invoices, and make order emails usable as VAT receipts.
  3. Ask your accountant to check the setup once, especially if you sell to the EU as well.

Payment options

Option What it is When you need it
Stripe Cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay Most UK stores
PayPal Wallet many buyers already trust Older audiences, marketplaces
Klarna Pay in three, or later Fashion, home, anything over £50
Clearpay Pay in four instalments Same as Klarna; some stores offer both

Accessibility

  1. Build to WCAG 2.1 AA. It’s the standard UK public sector sites must meet, and a sensible bar for everyone else.
  2. Test with a keyboard, including menus, sliders and forms.
  3. Skip overlay widgets. They don’t change the code a screen reader reads.

13Questions

Can I hire a WordPress developer for my UK business who isn’t based in the UK?

Yes. I’m in India, which is 4.5 to 5.5 hours ahead of the UK, and I work until 11 PM my time. That’s 5:30 PM in London in winter and 6:30 PM in summer, so we share your whole working day.

Will my cookie banner be UK GDPR compliant?

I set it up so analytics and ad tags don’t load until a visitor agrees, with Google Consent Mode wired in, which is what the ICO’s guidance expects. I can’t give legal advice, but the site will block trackers properly rather than just showing a banner.

Can you set up VAT in WooCommerce?

Yes. Prices are shown to consumers with 20% VAT included, tax is calculated per order, and invoices carry your VAT number. Your accountant should confirm the setup for your business.

How do payments work?

I invoice in US dollars, wherever you are, against milestones agreed in the quote. You don’t pay for a stage until you’ve seen it on the staging site.

How long does a website take?

Anywhere from one to six weeks, depending on the project. The written quote gives your exact timeline, and you see progress on a staging link from the first week.

Who owns the website when it’s done?

You do. The code, the domain, the hosting and every login are in your name from day one.
